Occupational Health - Diseases Prevention
| Diseases caused by exposure to or contact with hazards in work are generally called 'occupational / work-related diseases'. It is the duty of the employers to prevent employees from contacting occupational / work-related diseases. | ||
| There are various common occupational health hazards, (e.g. lifting heavy objects or repetitive movements, noise, dangerous substances, biological hazards, radiation, occupational stress, etc.) some of which are not easy to detect. The hazards may exist in different working environment such as offices, laboratories and workshops. One should be aware of the hazards and remedial measures and take active steps to avoid the development of occupational diseases. | ||
To ensure occupational health, a comprehensive occupational health programme should include: |
||
| Anticipating and Identifying Health Hazards | ||
| Having consideration in the planning stage | ||
| For work already underway: conducting workplace inspections, referring to occupational safety and health publications, interviewing with employees and consulting Safety Office or University Health Service | ||
| Evaluating the Health Risk | ||
| Different evaluation methods should be used to analyze the degree of risk of different health hazards, for example, measuring air contaminants levels, measuring work frequencies and physical demands, analyzing survey results and evaluating existing control measures, etc. Results should be compared with the relevant standards. | ||
| Developing Control Measures | ||
| Engineering control | ||
| Administrative control such as physical examination, training, work allocation, monitoring risks, health education and immunization | ||
